FAQ
What is the eWorld?
eWorld was an online service operated by Apple between June 1994 and March 1996, offering email, news, software downloads, and forums through a unique graphical city-themed interface for Macintosh users. It was designed as Apple’s answer to AOL and other early internet services, but limited availability, high costs, and low adoption led to its closure after less than two years.
What is the meaning of eWorld?
eWorld was an online service operated by Apple Inc. from 1994 to 1996 that provided email, news, forums, and information access through a graphical, city-themed interface for Macintosh and Newton users. The name “eWorld” referred to Apple’s virtual digital world, where each thematic area—like news, email, or support—was represented as a different building in a virtual town. The service was intended as Apple’s answer to AOL, offering a curated online community and support environment.
Where is the eWorld Conference?
The eWorld Conference takes place at Messe Essen in Essen, Germany. The 2025 event is scheduled for February 11–13 and serves as Europe’s leading trade fair for the energy industry. This annual conference gathers experts, exhibitors, and visitors from around the world to discuss innovations and solutions in energy and water sectors.
Why did Apple shut down eWorld?
Apple shut down eWorld on March 31, 1996, due to low subscriber numbers, high operating costs, and poor market performance. The service had only about 150,000 users compared to AOL’s 5 million, and Apple was cutting expenses during a major financial downturn. Management concluded eWorld was unsustainable as consumers moved to the open internet and web browsers replaced proprietary online services.
