Universal Orlando Resort, commonly known as Universal Orlando or simply Universal, formerly Universal Studios Escape, is an American theme park and entertainment resort complex based in Orlando, Florida. The resort is operated by Universal Parks & Resorts, a division of Comcast’s NBCUniversal.

This page is an archive of Universal Orlando maps and brochures dating back to 2001. I’m happy to say that we are the only place in the world that documents the changes in the official Universal Orlando map changes from year to year. But first, let’s look at some Universal Orlando history and fun facts…

Universal Orlando History

Universal Orlando is the second-largest resort in Greater Orlando, after nearby Walt Disney World Resort. Universal Orlando covers 541 acres of land.

Universal Orlando consists of two theme parks (Universal Studios Florida and Universal’s Islands of Adventure), an on-site waterpark (Volcano Bay), an on-site entertainment district (Universal CityWalk).

  • Loews Portofino Bay Hotel
  • Hard Rock Hotel
  • Loews Royal Pacific Resort
  • Cabana Bay Beach Resort
  • Loews Sapphire Falls Resort
  • Universal’s Aventura Hotel
  • Endless Summer Dockside Inn
  • Suites and Surfside Inn and Suites

It will soon add a new theme park (Epic Universe) with an accompanying hotel.

All of the hotel resorts offer Early Park Admission into The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and Universal’s Volcano Bay.

Additionally, the Loews Portofino Bay Hotel, Hard Rock Hotel and Loews Royal Pacific Resort offer free unlimited Universal Express Pass for use at participating Universal Studios Florida and Universal’s Islands of Adventure attractions. Similar products are valid at Volcano Bay, Halloween Horror Nights, and Rock the Universe.

Universal Orlando is one of the most visited resorts in the world, with an annual attendance of 21 million in 2017. Universal Orlando is the flagship resort of Universal Parks & Resorts, largely due to the competitive nature between the resort and Walt Disney World, which is only 15 miles away.

Is Universal Orlando Resort the same as Universal Studios?

Universal Orlando Resort is not the same as Universal Studios, although Universal Studios is a significant component of the resort. Universal Orlando Resort is a comprehensive entertainment complex located in Orlando, Florida, encompassing multiple theme parks, hotels, dining, and entertainment options. Universal Studios is one of the theme parks within the Universal Orlando Resort, known for its immersive film and television-themed attractions. In addition to Universal Studios, the resort also includes Islands of Adventure, Volcano Bay (a water park), and various hotels and resorts.

How many Universal resorts are there in Orlando?

There are three Universal resorts in Orlando, Florida. These include Universal Orlando Resort, which is the primary and most extensive complex featuring multiple theme parks, hotels, and entertainment options. Additionally, there are two water parks in Orlando: Universal’s Volcano Bay and the original Wet ‘n Wild, which was acquired by Universal and rebranded as Volcano Bay. Each of these resorts offers a unique experience for visitors, ranging from theme park thrills to water-based attractions.

    • The Toothsome Chocolate Emporium & Savory Feast Kitchen, a restaurant with a large selection of sweet and savory treats.
    • Hello Kitty Shop, a store selling Hello Kitty merchandise.
  • Changes:
    • The Studio Stars restaurant has been replaced with The NBC Sports Grill & Brew.

  • The 2023 map boasts a refreshed design and layout compared to the 2022 version.
  • Several new rides are present in the 2023 map: Minion Mayhem in the Despicable Me area, Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade area, and the Jurassic World VelociCoaster in the Jurassic Park area. These were absent in 2022.

Overall Changes:

  • The biggest change between the two maps is the addition of the Despicable Me Minion Mayhem ride in 2022. This ride is now located in its own themed area, Minion Mayhem, which was created by relocating the former Superstar Stage 16.
  • The Hollywood Horror Make-Up Show was also replaced with The Bourne Stuntacular in 2022.
  • The Disaster! attraction was replaced with the Fast & Furious – Supercharged interactive driving experience in 2022.

Rides and Attractions:

  • Universal Studios Florida:
    • The most notable change is the addition of the Fast & Furious – Supercharged ride in the Hollywood area in 2020. This replaced The Fast and the Furious: Supercharged Experience.
    • TheRevenge of the Mummy ride underwent refurbishment in 2020, potentially explaining its absence from the 2020 map.
  • Universal’s Islands of Adventure:
    • The Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure ride opened in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in 2019, absent from the 2020 map.
    • The Poseidon’s Fury: Escape from the Lost City water ride closed permanently in 2020 and is not shown on the map.

Universal’s Islands of Adventure:

  • No major changes in 2012, but the 2010 addition of Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey continued to be a popular draw.

Universal CityWalk:

  • Major addition:
    • Cowabunga Bay℠ Water Park: This new water park offered a variety of slides, a wave pool, and a lazy river for a refreshing escape.
