Universal Studios Florida Map and Brochure (2024 – 1990)

Location: Orlando, Florida

Years Active: 1990 – Active

Universal Studios Florida (Universal Studios or USF) is a theme park in Orlando, Florida. Primarily themed to movies, television, and other aspects of the entertainment industry, the park opened to the public on June 7, 1990, and remains one of the best theme parks in Florida!. Universal Studios Florida is consistently ranked as one of the top 10 amusement parks in the US, and for good reason!

This page is an archive of Universal Studios Florida maps and brochures dating back to 1990. I’m proud to say that we are the only place in the world that describes changes in the official Universal Studios Orlando map changes from year to year. But first, let’s look at some USF history and fun facts…

Universal Studios Florida History

Universal Studios Orlando is owned and operated by NBC Universal and features numerous rides, attractions, and live shows. Universal Studios Florida was the first component of the larger Universal Orlando Resort to open, ranking eleventh in the world and sixth in North America for attendance among amusement parks in 2019 while hosting approximately 10.9 million visitors.

In addition to the theme park aspect, early design focused on providing guests with a behind-the-scenes look at film and television.

A significant portion of the park operated as an active production studio. As producers and filmmakers showed no interest in filming onsite in Orlando, Universal’s approach evolved, transitioning to a first-person perspective for its heavily themed rides, areas, and attractions.

The resort eventually expanded by introducing two additional theme parks, Universal’s Islands of Adventure in 1999 and Volcano Bay in 2017, as well as the restaurant and retail epicenter Universal CityWalk, which also opened in 1999.

Universal Studios Florida Map 1991

Comparing the Universal Studios Florida 1991 and 1990 park maps.

Both maps show the park divided into five main areas: Hollywood, New York, San Francisco/Amity, the Expo Center, and the Front Lot. However, there are some key differences between the two maps.

  • Expansion: The most obvious difference is that the park was much smaller in 1990. The 1991 map shows that the park has expanded to the south, with the addition of the Nickelodeon Studios tour and the Murder, She Wrote mystery dinner show.
  • New attractions: Several new attractions were added to the park in 1991, including the Back to the Future: The Ride simulator and the Jaws attraction.
  • Changes to existing attractions: Some of the attractions that were already in the park in 1990 were changed or updated in 1991. For example, the Kongfrontation ride was originally called Kong Encounter, and the E.T. Adventure ride was originally called Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
  • Removal of attractions: A few attractions that were in the park in 1990 were removed in 1991. For example, the Murder, She Wrote mystery dinner show was closed in 1996, and the Back to the Future: The Ride simulator was closed in 2001.

Universal Studios Florida Map 1992

Comparing the Universal Studios Florida maps from 1992 to 1991 reveals intriguing transformations and the introduction of new experiences in just a year’s time.

Overall changes:

  • Expansion: The most noticeable difference is the park’s expansion in 1992. The 1991 map shows only two lands: Hollywood and New York. The 1992 map adds a third land, Production Central, to the north of Hollywood. This new land houses several attractions based on behind-the-scenes moviemaking, such as a studio tour and a prop exhibit.
  • New attractions: Several new attractions were added in 1992, including:
    • The Funtastic World of Hanna-Barbera: This colorful land featured carnival games and rides based on popular Hanna-Barbera cartoons like The Flintstones and Scooby-Doo.
    • Murder, She Wrote Mystery Theatre: This interactive show allowed guests to participate in solving a murder mystery alongside characters from the TV series.
    • Nickelodeon Studios: This attraction gave guests a behind-the-scenes look at Nickelodeon’s TV shows and featured interactive exhibits and character meet-and-greets.

Specific changes:

  • Hollywood:
    • The Kongfrontation attraction, a boat ride through a King Kong-themed jungle, is no longer present in the 1992 map.
    • The Psycho Stage has been replaced with a Hard Rock Cafe.
  • New York:
    • The E.T. Adventure attraction, a dark ride based on the Steven Spielberg film, has been relocated to a new area in Production Central in 1992.
    • The Jaws attraction remains in the same location, but the surrounding area has been rethemed from Amity to a more generic harbor setting.

Additional notes:

  • The 1991 map shows a proposed expansion to the north of the park, which likely became the basis for the Production Central land added in 1992.
