Universal Studios Florida (Universal Studios or USF) is a theme park in Orlando, Florida. Primarily themed to movies, television, and other aspects of the entertainment industry, the park opened to the public on June 7, 1990, and remains one of the best theme parks in Florida!

Universal Studios Florida is consistently ranked as one of the top 10 amusement parks in the US, and for good reason!

Universal Studios Florida Map 2024

In 2024, Universal Studios Florida introduced several major additions. On June 14, DreamWorks Land officially opened, featuring Shrek’s Swamp, the Trollercoaster, Panda Village, character meet-and-greets, and a new indoor live show. That same day, the park debuted CineSational: A Symphonic Spectacular nighttime lagoon show and Hogwarts Always, a projection show in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade. On July 3, the Universal Mega Movie Parade, the park’s largest daytime parade to date, premiered.

Universal Studios Florida Map 2023

In 2023, Universal Studios Florida saw significant changes beginning January 15 with the permanent closure of multiple Woody Woodpecker’s KidZone attractions, including Fievel’s Playland, Woody Woodpecker’s Nuthouse Coaster, Curious George Goes to Town, DreamWorks Destination, and the Shrek and Donkey Meet & Greet. Later in the year, Illumination’s Minion Cafe opened on June 16, followed by the debut of Minion Land on Illumination Avenue on August 11, which introduced the new attraction Illumination’s Villain-Con Minion Blast.

In 2022, Universal Studios Florida experienced several closures and updates. On January 9, the long-running Shrek 4-D attraction permanently closed, while Revenge of the Mummy closed early in the year for refurbishment before reopening on August 30. Additionally, Universal’s Classic Monsters Cafe, a major dining location, permanently shut down in May after more than two decades. Beyond the park itself, Universal’s Great Movie Escape opened at CityWalk on December 9, featuring two immersive escape room experiences.

Universal Studios Florida Map 2021

In 2021, Universal Studios Florida saw the closure of several long-standing shows. On February 3, A Day in the Park with Barney, a family musical and play area, permanently closed. Later in the year, Fear Factor Live, the audience-participation stunt show, ended its run in December. Additionally, at the resort’s CityWalk, the Blue Man Group concluded its 14-year residency on February 1, marking the end of a major entertainment offering impacted by the pandemic.

Universal Studios Florida Map 2020

In 2020, Universal Studios Florida temporarily closed on March 15 along with the rest of the resort due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, before officially reopening to the public with new health and safety measures on June 5. Later that summer, the park introduced The Bourne Stuntacular, a live-action stunt show based on the Bourne film franchise, which debuted on June 30 in the Hollywood area as a major new entertainment offering.

In 2019, Universal Studios Florida introduced a new dining venue with the opening of the Today Cafe on May 16. Located in the Hollywood area of the park, the quick-service restaurant was inspired by NBC’s long-running morning show TODAY and was designed to resemble the iconic television set, marking the year’s most notable addition to the park’s food and beverage offerings.

In 2018, Universal Studios Florida added two major offerings. On April 23, the Fast & Furious – Supercharged attraction officially opened, bringing a new ride experience to the park. Later that summer, on July 16, the park debuted Universal’s Cinematic Celebration, a nighttime lagoon show that became the primary evening entertainment, showcasing an array of Universal’s film and franchise properties through water, light, and projection effects.

In 2017, Universal Studios Florida introduced the new 3D ride Race Through New York Starring Jimmy Fallon, which officially opened on April 6. Later in the year, on October 8, the long-running attraction Terminator 2: 3-D: Battle Across Time permanently closed to prepare for a new live-action experience. Additionally, the resort expanded with the debut of Volcano Bay on May 25, Universal Orlando’s third theme park and first dedicated water theme park.

In 2016, Universal Studios Florida closed Beetlejuice’s Graveyard Revue on January 5, ending the long-running musical stage show. Later that summer, the resort expanded its accommodations with the July 14 opening of Loews Sapphire Falls Resort, a new Caribbean-themed hotel that became the fifth on-site property at Universal Orlando.

In 2015, Universal Studios Florida closed several long-standing attractions. On August 13, the walk-through museum Lucy: A Tribute permanently ended its 25-year run. Soon after, Disaster! A Major Motion Picture Ride… Starring YOU! closed on September 8 to make way for a new ride, followed by the closure of Twister…Ride It Out on November 2 to prepare for an upcoming replacement.

In 2014, Universal Studios Florida expanded significantly with the July 8 opening of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley, featuring the marquee attraction Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts. The debut also introduced the Hogwarts Express, providing transportation between Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade in Islands of Adventure. Earlier in the year, on March 31, the resort opened its fourth on-site hotel, Universal’s Cabana Bay Beach Resort, adding retro-themed accommodations for guests.

In 2013, Universal Studios Florida introduced several major additions. On June 20, Transformers: The Ride – 3D officially opened following a grand ceremony. Earlier that summer, the park debuted Fast Food Boulevard, a Simpsons-themed dining area featuring locations such as Krusty Burger and Moe’s Tavern. By August, the Springfield expansion was completed with the opening of Kang & Kodos’ Twirl ‘n’ Hurl, a spinning ride designed as a family-friendly attraction within the new themed area.

In 2012, Universal Studios Florida underwent major changes starting with the permanent closure of the Jaws ride and the surrounding Amity area on January 2. The park introduced new entertainment with the debut of Universal’s Superstar Parade on May 8, featuring characters and themed floats. On July 2, Despicable Me Minion Mayhem, a 3-D motion simulator attraction, officially opened, bringing one of Illumination’s most popular franchises into the park as a significant new ride experience.

In 2011, Universal Studios Florida permanently closed Jimmy Neutron’s Nicktoon Blast, with the simulator ride operating on a seasonal schedule until its final day on August 18. Later that year, the park introduced the Macy’s Holiday Parade for the first time, featuring balloons brought from the annual New York City event, marking its debut as part of the holiday entertainment lineup beginning December 3.

In 2009, Universal Studios Florida introduced a major new thrill ride with the opening of Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit on August 19. The roller coaster featured a unique element allowing riders to select their own soundtrack during the experience, distinguishing it as a notable addition to the park’s lineup of attractions that year.

In 2008, Universal Studios Florida saw several major updates. On January 17, the Disaster! attraction officially reopened, replacing Earthquake: The Big One with a refreshed movie-shoot theme. On March 14, The Boneyard, a long-standing movie prop display, permanently closed to clear space for a new roller coaster project. Shortly after, on May 16, The Simpsons Ride debuted as a new motion-simulator attraction, becoming one of the year’s most significant additions to the park’s lineup.

In 2007, Universal Studios Florida closed two major attractions. On March 30, the opening-day ride Back to the Future: The Ride permanently ended operations. Later in the year, on November 4, Earthquake: The Big One, the special effects disaster simulation, also closed to prepare for redevelopment into a new experience. These closures marked significant transitions in the park’s lineup as Universal prepared for future attractions to replace long-standing staples.

In 2005, Universal Studios Florida introduced a new live entertainment offering with the debut of Fear Factor Live on May 27. Located in the World Expo section of the park, the audience-participation stunt show allowed guests to compete in challenges inspired by the NBC television series Fear Factor.

In 2004, Universal Studios Florida saw both a major new addition and a notable closure. On May 21, the indoor roller coaster Revenge of the Mummy officially opened, combining dark ride elements with high-speed thrills. Later in the year, on September 4, the long-running Wild, Wild, Wild West Stunt Show, which had operated since the park’s opening in 1990, permanently closed, marking the end of one of the park’s original live entertainment offerings.

In 2003, Universal Studios Florida saw the closure of an original attraction and the debut of a new one. On January 3, Alfred Hitchcock: The Art of Making Movies, which had been part of the park since opening day in 1990, permanently closed. Later that year, on June 12, the park introduced Shrek 4-D, a new multi-sensory theater experience that replaced the former Hitchcock attraction and became a key addition to the park’s lineup.

In 2002, Universal Studios Florida retired one of its original attractions. On September 8, the opening-day ride Kongfrontation, a boat-based experience featuring encounters with King Kong, permanently closed to make way for future development.

In 2001, Universal Studios Florida added two new attractions. On June 8, Jimmy Neutron’s Nicktoon Blast, a motion-simulator ride featuring characters from Nickelodeon, officially opened to guests. Later in the year, the park introduced Animal Planet Live!, a newly themed version of its long-running animal actors show, which debuted in December.

In 2000, Universal Studios Florida introduced a major new attraction and retired an original one. On April 14, Men in Black: Alien Attack, an interactive dark ride based on the popular film franchise, officially opened to the public. Later in the year, on October 20, The Funtastic World of Hanna-Barbera, one of the park’s original opening-day simulator rides, permanently closed to make way for a new experience that would debut the following year.

In 1999, Universal Studios Florida expanded its offerings and underwent a major rebranding. On March 13, the Woody Woodpecker’s Nuthouse Coaster opened in the KidZone area as a new family roller coaster. On May 28, Universal’s Islands of Adventure, the resort’s second theme park, officially opened to the public. That same day, the entire property was rebranded as Universal Studios Escape, marking the transition from a single-park destination into a multi-park resort complex.

Universal Studios Florida Map 1997

In 1997, Universal Studios Florida introduced a new entertainment offering with the debut of Hercules and Xena: Wizards of the Screen on June 27. This show, based on the popular syndicated television series, showcased digital effects and replaced a previous attraction in the park.

In 1996, Universal Studios Florida introduced a major new attraction while retiring others. On May 4, Twister…Ride It Out officially opened in the New York area, offering guests a new disaster-themed experience. Later that year, on November 8, the long-running Ghostbusters Spooktacular show permanently closed to make way for its replacement, followed shortly by the closure of the Screen Test Home Video Adventure in the Hollywood section on November 11.

In 1995, Universal Studios Florida saw both a closure and a new addition. In the spring, the Production Studio Tour, one of the park’s original opening-day tram experiences, permanently closed after carrying millions of guests behind the scenes. Later that summer, on July 11, the park introduced A Day in the Park with Barney, a new children’s live show and play area featuring Barney, Baby Bop, and BJ in a dedicated 350-seat theater.

In 1994, Universal Studios Florida permanently closed The Boneyard, an outdoor exhibit featuring movie props. The two-acre site was cleared to make way for future development, which would later bring new family-oriented attractions to the park. This closure marked the year’s most significant change as Universal prepared to reimagine the space for upcoming offerings.

In 1993, Universal Studios Florida saw the return of a major attraction. On March 27, the Jaws ride officially reopened to the public after being completely rebuilt. The updated version featured redesigned ride mechanics, new show scenes, and a refreshed finale, restoring one of the park’s original centerpiece experiences after significant redevelopment.

On May 15, Beetlejuice’s Rock and Roll Graveyard Revue debuted, replacing the An American Tail Theatre stage show, which permanently closed that year. Shortly after, on June 3, Lucy: A Tribute, a walk-through museum exhibit honoring Lucille Ball, officially opened to guests.
