Location: Wilmington, Delaware

Years Active: 1905 – Active

The Brandywine Zoo’s been a Wilmington favorite for over a century. It’s tucked away in Brandywine Park โ€“ a total escape in the city. This place is serious about saving animals and teaching folks about them. They’ve got the cool stuff like Amur tigers, but the red pandas always steal the show.

Want a real insider tip? Check out the Madagascar Exhibit. You’ll see lemurs up close, and those crazy radiated tortoises are a trip. They even have a giant walk-through bird exhibit. If you’ve got kids, they’ll go nuts.

The zoo isn’t afraid to have some fun, either. Their Halloween event, “Boo at the Zoo,” is awesome. And those summer Zoo Camps? Word is they fill up fast. People are starting to realize this isn’t some sleepy little zoo. They’re always adding new stuff and their conservation work is top-notch.

The mornings are usually quieter if crowds aren’t your thing. Plus, some animals are way more active then!

The zoo also transferred its Hoffmanโ€™s two-toed sloth, Jennifer Lawrence, to Lion Country Safari in Florida, and the facility was closed on January 1, 2025, for holiday observance.
