Islands of Adventure or IOA, originally called Universal Studios Islands of Adventure, is a theme park located in Orlando, Florida. It opened on May 28, 1999, along with CityWalk, as part of an expansion that converted Universal Studios Florida into the Universal Orlando Resort.

This page is an archive of Universal Islands of Adventure maps and brochures dating back to 1999. I’m excited to share that we’re the only ones in the world who track the changes on the official Universal Islands of Adventure map from year to year.

The park opened in 1999 and originally had six islands. A seventh island, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, was added in 2010. The eighth island, Skull Island, opened in 2016. Universal’s Islands of Adventure consistently ranks among the best roller coaster parks in the US, offering a variety of rides, shows, and attractions for guests of all ages.

Here is a detailed comparison of the two Universal Islands of Adventure maps you sent me, highlighting the changes made between 2023 and 2024:

Rides and Attractions:

  • New Additions:
    • Jurassic World VelociCoaster (2023): This launched roller coaster takes riders to speeds of up to 70 miles per hour, making it the park’s fastest and most intense coaster.

    • The Mystic Fountain (2024): This new interactive show in The Lost Continent features water jets, music, and special effects.
  • Removals:

Overall changes:

  • The most significant change is the addition of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, which opened in June 2010. This new themed land includes the Hogwarts castle, Hogsmeade village, and several rides and attractions, such as Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey and Flight of the Hippogriff.
  • The Seuss Landing area has also been expanded, with the addition of the Cat in the Hat ride and the Seuss Express train ride.
  • The Lost Continent area has been slightly modified, with the Sindbad Stunt Show being rethemed as “The Eighth Voyage of Sindbad.”

Specific changes:

  • Seuss Landing expansion: The biggest change between the two maps is the expansion of Seuss Landing. In 2006, Seuss Landing was a much smaller area, with only The Cat in the Hat ride and One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish. In 2007, Seuss Landing had doubled in size, with the addition of Caro-Seuss-el, The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man, and If I Ran the Zoo.
  • Marvel Super Hero Island expansion: Marvel Super Hero Island also saw some expansion in 2007, with the addition of Doctor Doom’s Fearfall.
  • Lost Continent changes: The Lost Continent saw a few changes in 2007, with the Sindbad Storybook Voyage being replaced by The Eighth Voyage of Sindbad and the opening of the Mystic Fountain.
  • Jurassic Park changes: Jurassic Park remained largely unchanged between 2006 and 2007.

Universal Islands of Adventure’s slogan Vacation Like You Mean It was introduced in 2013.

Islands of Adventure is modeled after a journey of exploration, where guests embark on an adventure to visit various themed islands. Initially, the park featured six islands.

A seventh, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, was added in 2010, themed to the highly successful Harry Potter franchise. It was Universal’s largest investment since the resort’s founding in 1990. The expansion led to a significant increase in attendance, and in 2013, Islands of Adventure ranked seventh domestically and eleventh internationally after hosting approximately 8.1 million guests.

The eighth island, Skull Island, opened on July 13, 2016, and is themed to the King Kong franchise.
