Islands of Adventure or IOA, originally called Universal Studios Islands of Adventure, is a theme park located in Orlando, Florida. It opened on May 28, 1999, along with CityWalk, as part of an expansion that converted Universal Studios Florida into the Universal Orlando Resort.
The park opened in 1999 and originally had six islands. A seventh island, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, was added in 2010. The eighth island, Skull Island, opened in 2016. Universal’s Islands of Adventure consistently ranks among the best roller coaster parks in the US, offering a variety of rides, shows, and attractions for guests of all ages.

Universal Islands of Adventure Map 2024
In 2024, Universal Islands of Adventure introduced two new entertainment offerings. On March 16, The Mystic Fountain debuted in The Lost Continent, providing an interactive show featuring water jets, music, and special effects. Shortly after, on April 29, Hogwarts Always launched at Hogwarts Castle in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade, a projection show that takes guests through iconic moments of a Hogwarts school year, from Diagon Alley shopping to the Sorting Ceremony and House Cup celebration.

In 2023, Universal Islands of Adventure saw both a major reopening and a significant closure. On March 30, Caro-Seuss-el in Seuss Landing reopened after a 21-month refurbishment, restoring the whimsical carousel attraction for guests. Shortly after, on May 9, the opening-day walk-through attraction Poseidon’s Fury in The Lost Continent permanently closed following its final performance, marking the end of its long run at the park and leaving a notable change in that section of Islands of Adventure.

In 2021, Universal Islands of Adventure introduced a major new attraction and saw the closure of another. On June 10, the Jurassic World VelociCoaster officially opened, becoming Florida’s fastest and tallest launch coaster and a headline addition to the park. Just a few days later, in mid-June, the Caro-Seuss-el ride in Seuss Landing closed to begin a lengthy, multi-year refurbishment, temporarily removing one of the land’s signature family-friendly attractions.

In 2020, Universal’s Islands of Adventure experienced a temporary shutdown and later reopening due to resort-wide operations. On March 15, the park closed to the public along with the rest of Universal Orlando Resort. After nearly three months, Islands of Adventure officially reopened on June 5 with new operational guidelines and enhanced safety protocols in place, marking its return to welcoming guests under adjusted procedures for health and safety during that year.
Universal Islands of Adventure Map 2019
In 2019, Universal’s Islands of Adventure debuted a major new attraction in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade. On June 13, Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure officially opened to the public. The multiple-launch steel roller coaster, manufactured by Intamin, combined storytelling with high-speed thrills and detailed theming, becoming a signature ride for the park and expanding the Harry Potter land’s lineup of immersive experiences.

In 2018, Universal’s Islands of Adventure introduced a new nighttime experience and closed a long-running show. On January 31, The Nighttime Lights at Hogwarts Castle debuted, using projection mapping to celebrate the Hogwarts houses on select evenings in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade. Later in the year, on September 15, the opening-day stunt show The Eighth Voyage of Sindbad in The Lost Continent permanently closed after nearly two decades of performances.

In 2017, Universal’s Islands of Adventure saw both the closure of a major coaster and the debut of a new seasonal show. On September 4, the Dragon Challenge dueling roller coasters permanently closed to make way for a future Harry Potter-themed attraction. Later that year, on November 18, The Magic of Christmas at Hogwarts Castle debuted, a holiday projection show that transformed Hogwarts Castle with festive visuals and ran seasonally through early January.

In 2016, Universal’s Islands of Adventure added a major new attraction and reopened a fan favorite. On July 13, Skull Island: Reign of Kong officially opened, bringing a new themed ride experience to the park. Shortly after, on August 4, The Incredible Hulk Coaster reopened following a nearly year-long refurbishment that introduced significant upgrades and enhancements, restoring one of the park’s most iconic roller coasters with refreshed technology and improved ride elements.

In 2015, Universal’s Islands of Adventure introduced a new attraction while closing two others. On May 22, the Raptor Encounter opened in Jurassic Park, giving guests an interactive meet-and-greet with a Velociraptor. Later in the year, on September 8, The Incredible Hulk Coaster closed to begin a major multi-year refurbishment. Shortly after, on September 15, the opening-day stunt show The Eighth Voyage of Sindbad permanently closed, marking the end of its long-running presence in the park.

In 2014, Universal’s Islands of Adventure introduced a major addition with the opening of the Hogwarts Express: Hogsmeade Station. This attraction connected the park directly to Universal Studios Florida via King’s Cross Station in London, allowing guests to travel between the two parks as part of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter expansion. This marked the debut of inter-park transportation themed to the Harry Potter franchise and expanded the immersive experience of the resort.

In 2012, Universal’s Islands of Adventure saw two major changes. The Triceratops Discovery Trail in the Jurassic Park section permanently closed on January 1, marking the removal of a long-standing walkthrough attraction. Later that year, The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man reopened after a significant technological upgrade, featuring high-definition 4K digital projections and re-animated visuals that refreshed the ride experience. These updates represented both a notable closure and a major enhancement within the park’s lineup.

In 2011, Universal’s Islands of Adventure experienced several notable changes. Dudley Do-Right’s Ripsaw Falls reopened on March 3 following a temporary closure caused by a minor fire. Later in the year, Universal confirmed the permanent end of the dueling feature on the Dragon Challenge roller coasters. Additionally, the Mat Hoffman’s Aggro Circus stunt show in Toon Lagoon held its final performances in late 2011, marking the closure of the extreme sports-themed entertainment offering.

In 2010, Universal’s Islands of Adventure underwent its most significant expansion with the grand opening of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade on June 18. The new land introduced Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey as its flagship attraction inside Hogwarts castle, alongside themed dining at the Three Broomsticks. Existing rides were rebranded to fit the new area, with Dueling Dragons becoming Dragon Challenge and The Flying Unicorn rethemed as Flight of the Hippogriff.

In 2009, Universal’s Islands of Adventure permanently closed the Enchanted Oak Tavern restaurant in the Merlinwood section. This closure was part of the preparations for the development of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, with the location set to be transformed into the Three Broomsticks dining venue within the new Hogsmeade area. This marked a significant step in the park’s transition toward the highly anticipated Harry Potter-themed expansion.

In 2008, Universal’s Islands of Adventure closed The Flying Unicorn family roller coaster on July 7. The attraction was shut down in preparation for its re-theming and incorporation into the upcoming Wizarding World of Harry Potter, where it would later reopen as Flight of the Hippogriff.
