Thrill metrics like speed, drop height, and inversions are used to rank the best rollercoasters in the world. The data points are also listed under each rollercoaster so you can see each ride’s main strengths and weaknesses.

But before judging any rollercoaster in a worldwide comparison, you need to have a baseline. Take a look at the perspective-setting data points below.

  • Date Opened – the world’s oldest operational rollercoaster opened in 1902.
  • Height – The world’s tallest rollercoaster is 456 feet high. The median rollercoaster height is roughly 90 feet tall.
  • Length – The longest rollercoaster in the world has an 8,133-foot-long track.
  • Seating Capacity – Most standard rollercoasters can accommodate 24 to 32 riders per train.
  • Drop – The biggest rollercoaster drop in the world is 418 feet high. Most rollercoasters have 80 ft to 120 ft drops.
  • Top Speed – The fastest rollercoaster in the world moves at 149.1 mph. Most rollercoasters have an average speed of 70 to 80 mph.
  • Ride duration – The longest-lasting rollercoaster ride in the world has a duration of 7 minutes and 34 seconds. Most rollercoaster rides last 1.5 minutes.
  • Maximum Angle (vertical) – The steepest vertical angle for a rollercoaster is 121 degrees. The most common vertical maximum among popular rollercoasters is 45 degrees.

With the above data as your baseline, you can see why the best rollercoasters in the world are ranked the way they are. The table below sorts the top 25 rollercoasters in the world from the best to the worst (of the best).

1. Formula Rossa

Formula Rossa
  • Location: Ferrari World Abu Dhabi
  • Date Opened: November 4, 2010
  • Height: 170.6 ft
  • Length: 6,804 ft
  • Seating Capacity: 16 riders per train
  • Drop: 170 ft
  • Top Speed: 149.1 mph
  • Ride duration: 1:32

Formula Rossa gets the crown because it is currently the world’s fastest rollercoaster. It is located in Abu Dhabi’s Ferrari World. So, if you want to get your Formula Rossa experience, you’ll have to travel all the way to the UAE. And here’s why you might want to catch that flight.

This launched coaster accelerates to a top speed of 149 mph in roughly 5 seconds. If you’re chasing an adrenaline rush, Formula Rossa’s speed alone should be a big enough draw for you. But the ride also has a staggering 170-foot drop and multiple airtime hills that produce a G-force of up to 4.8g.

  • Formula Rossa is the world’s fastest rollercoaster.
  • The ride lasts 1 minute and 32 seconds.
  • All riders have to wear safety goggles to protect their eyes from airborne particles.
  • The rollercoaster has no inversions or vertical loops.

2. Kingda Ka

Kingda Ka
  • Location: Six Flags Great Adventure
  • Date Opened: May 21, 2005
  • Height: 456 ft
  • Length: 3,118 ft
  • Seating Capacity: 18 riders per train
  • Drop: 418 ft
  • Top Speed: 128 mph
  • Ride duration: 0:28

In the 2000s, Kingda Ka was the fastest and tallest rollercoaster in the world. Today, its speed record might be broken, but it still remains the world’s tallest rollercoaster. Currently, it is the world’s second-fastest rollercoaster, with a top speed of 128 miles per hour.

The ride lasts 28 seconds only, during which you cover 3,118 feet of steel track. Along the way, you experience a maximum incline of 90° and a 418-foot drop. Because the experience lasts less than 30 seconds, the rollercoaster needs to accelerate to its top speed pretty quickly. It goes from 0 to 128 mph in 3.5 seconds, thanks to its powerful hydraulic launch mechanism.

  • Kingda Ka is the world’s tallest rollercoaster.
  • The rollercoaster is the fastest in America and the second-fastest in the world.
  • It accelerates from 0 to 128 mph in 3.5 seconds.
  • The ride is one of two strata coasters in the world (400 ft+in height).

3. Red Force

Red Force
  • Location: Ferrari Land Spain
  • Date Opened: April 7, 2017
  • Height: 367 ft
  • Length: 2,890 ft
  • Seating Capacity: 12 riders per train
  • Drop: 367 ft
  • Top Speed: 112 mph
  • Ride duration: 00:39

Red Force is yet another Ferrari-themed rollercoaster with record-breaking speed. It is the fastest rollercoaster in Europe, with a maximum speed of 112 miles per hour and a maximum vertical incline of 90 degrees, thanks to its top-hat feature. The Red Force experience lasts 39 seconds, during which riders experience a G-force of 1.35g, going over one top hat and one airtime hill.

There are no inversions or other track maneuvers aside from its giant top-hat section. The ride is located at Ferrari Land in Spain’s PortAventura World. The park also has at least two other thrill rides that you might like.

  • Red Force is the fastest rollercoaster in Spain.
  • It accelerates from 0 to 112 in 5 seconds.
  • The ride has a maximum vertical angle of 90 degrees.
  • With a 367-foot drop, it is one of seven Giga coasters in the whole world (300 ft+ height).

4. Superman: Escape from Krypton

Superman: Escape from Krypton
  • Location: Six Flags Magic Mountain
  • Date Opened: March 15, 1997
  • Height: 415 ft
  • Length: 1,235 ft
  • Seating Capacity: 14 riders per train
  • Drop: 328.1 ft
  • Top Speed: 100 mph
  • Ride duration: 0:28

Superhero-themed rollercoasters are usually not the fastest or the tallest. But Superman: Escape from Krypton broke a surprising number of records when it opened. It was the tallest rollercoaster in the world at one point and tied with an Australian rollercoaster for the fastest coaster accolade.

The ride features a staggering 328.1-foot drop and reaches a top speed of 100 miles per hour. Riders zip across 1,235 feet of steel tracks in 28 seconds and experience a G force of 4.5g.

Currently, Superman: Escape from Krypton is different from other speedy coasters because it has reverse movement, which makes the ride experience more exciting. The rollercoaster goes from 0 to 100 mph in seven seconds and has a maximum vertical incline of 90 degrees.

  • Superman: Escape from Krypton is one of the tallest rollercoasters in the world.
  • It accelerates to 100 mph in 7 seconds.
  • The ride lasts only 28 seconds.
  • This rollercoaster was once the tallest in the world.

5. Steel Dragon 2000

Steel Dragon 2000
  • Location: Nagashima Spa Land
  • Date Opened: August 1, 2000
  • Height: 318 ft
  • Length: 8,133 ft
  • Seating Capacity: 28 riders per train
  • Drop: 307 ft
  • Top Speed: 95.0 mph
  • Ride duration: 4:00

For many coasterheads, Steel Dragon 2000 might be the best rollercoaster in the world. It might not have the highest speed or the greatest drop, but it is one of the longest-lasting rides despite having a maximum speed of 95 miles per hour. It currently holds the record of being the longest rollercoaster in the world.

But unlike the average terrain explorer, this one packs quite a collection of thrills in its 8,133-foot-long track. Where most record-breaking rollercoaster experiences last under one minute, Steel Dragon 2000 has a duration of 4 minutes. During that time, you experience a G-force of up to 3.5g and tilt vertically at a maximum angle of 68 degrees.

The rollercoaster has a 307-foot drop, making it one of the world’s only seven Giga coasters. Also, unlike most record-breaking launched coasters, this one has a traditional chain lift mechanism.

The ride also has more airtime hills than speedier rollercoasters like the Red Force and Formula Rossa. So, if you’re a fan of the overall rollercoaster experience and not just speed, you might prefer Steel Dragon 2000 over its speedier (and less holistic) counterparts.

  • Steel Dragon is the longest rollercoaster in the world.
  • It has a top speed of 95 miles per hour.
  • The rollercoaster has one of the seven tallest drops in the world.
  • It is the fastest chain lift hill rollercoaster in the world

6. Millennium Force

Millennium Force
  • Location: Cedar Point
  • Date Opened: May 13, 2000
  • Height: 310 ft
  • Length: 6,595 ft
  • Seating Capacity: 36 riders per train
  • Drop: 300 ft
  • Top Speed: 93 mph
  • Ride duration: 2:20

Millennium Force is rollercoaster royalty. It uses a conventional cable lift launch to reach a top speed of 93 miles per hour. It has a 300-foot drop and a ride duration of 2 minutes and 20 seconds.

During this time, riders experience a G-force of 4.5g and go over two major hills. The first is the ride’s lift hill, and the second is an 182-foot hill that produces a sensation of complete weightlessness.

Where most speedy coasters lean on their speed alone, this one has nine distinct maneuvers spread across its 6,595-foot track. That’s why Millenium Force is a bucket list item for most rollercoaster enthusiasts.

  • Millennium Force is one of the world’s only seven Giga coasters (300 ft+ drop).
  • It has a top speed of 93 miles per hour, produced with a traditional cable lift hill.
  • The ride lasts 2 minutes and 20 seconds.
  • It produces a G-force of 4.5g.

7. Leviathan

Leviathan
  • Location: Canada’s Wonderland
  • Date Opened: May 6, 2012
  • Height: 306 ft
  • Length: 5,486 ft
  • Seating Capacity: 32 riders per train
  • Drop: 306 ft
  • Top Speed: 92 mph
  • Ride duration: 3:28

When ranking rollercoasters by the thrill factor, Leviathan has got to be among the top few. It is a 306-foot Giga coaster located in Canada’s Wonderland. This rollercoaster has a top speed of 92 miles per hour, which it reaches through a traditional chain lift hill mechanism.

The Leviathan experience lasts 3 minutes and 28 seconds, during which riders zip across 5,486 feet of steel tracks.

The ride has six major hills and eight distinct drops, which is why so many coasterheads prefer it over faster –less impressive– rollercoasters. For the past ten years, it has been among the top 15 rides in the Golden Ticket Awards’ steel rollercoasters category. And even today, it is one of the seven tallest rollercoasters in the world.

  • Leviathan is Canada’s tallest rollercoaster.
  • The ride has a 306-foot drop.
  • The rollercoaster has a top speed of 92 miles per hour.
  • The ride has multiple hills and 8 drops.

8. Orion

Orion
  • Location: Kings Island
  • Date Opened: July 2, 2020
  • Height: 287 ft
  • Length: 5,321 ft
  • Seating Capacity: 32 riders per train
  • Drop: 300 ft
  • Top Speed: 91 mph
  • Ride duration: 3:00

Orion is a unique rollercoaster with a sci-fi and aerospace theme. It is located at Kings Island, which is a destination most coasterheads visit at least once. The Orion experience begins with thematic audio and video, after which riders get on the rollercoaster.

A standard chain lift hill is used to get the riders up a 287-foot climb. Then comes the 300-foot drop, after which the train accelerates to 91 miles per hour. But if you think that’s the ride’s highlight, you’re mistaken. Orion has seven more hills after its biggest drop. Four of those hills are over 100 feet high, and one of them is a 200-foot horseshoe.

  • Orion is the most recent Giga coaster in the world.
  • It has a top speed of 91 miles per hour, which it reaches towards the bottom of its 300-foot drop.
  • The ride has 8 hills, including its first drop.
  • Its second biggest hill is 200 feet high.

9. Intimidator 305

Intimidator 305
  • Location: Kings Dominion
  • Date Opened: April 2, 2010
  • Height: 305 ft
  • Length: 300 ft
  • Seating Capacity: 32 riders per train
  • Drop: 300 ft
  • Top Speed: 90 mph
  • Ride duration: 3:00

Intimidator is a truly intimidating rollercoaster that is described as a cross between Maverick and the previously discussed Millennium Force. Its tall lift hill is similar to Millenium’s, and its near-ground tight turns are more like those of Maverick. But this Kings Island rollercoaster has more to offer than similarities to popular Cedar Point attractions.

It has a 300-foot drop and a top speed of 90 miles per hour. The ride is 5,100 feet long and lasts three minutes. During this time, riders experience 7 camelback hills and multiple tight turns.

Drop-chasers love its steep 80-degree drop, while speed-chasers are drawn by its 90 mph speed. But those who like loops and inversions might not be happy with this ride. Like every Giga coaster in the world, Intimidator 305 has no vertical loops or inversions of any kind.

  • Intimidator 305 has a top speed of 90 mph.
  • The ride has a height of 305 feet and a 300-foot drop.
  • It covers 5,100 feet of track in its 3-minute duration.
  • Intimidator 305’s maximum vertical angle is 85 degrees.

10. Falcon’s Flight

Falcon’s Flight
  • Location: Six Flags Qiddiya
  • Opening Date: TBA
  • Height: 531 ft
  • Length: 14,107 ft
  • Seating Capacity: 14 riders per train
  • Drop: 606 ft
  • Top Speed: 155 mph

Falcon’s Flight might have the top spot in the best rollercoasters ranking when it opens to the general public. It definitely has the specs to take the top spot. However, the fact that it is under construction bumps it below every operational Giga coaster. This rollercoaster is under construction at Six Flags Qiddiya in Saudi Arabia.

Falcon’s Flight, when it opens (and if it opens), will be the world’s first and only exa coaster (600 ft+ drop). Moreover, it will have a top speed of 155 mph, roughly 6 mph faster than the current world-best in terms of speed (Formula Rossa: 149 mph).

But before you get too excited, keep in mind that Saudi Arabia has a history of announcing moonshot projects and abandoning them after a few news cycles. That’s why, despite having the specs to be the best rollercoaster in this world, this one ranks below the likes of Red Falcon and Formula Rossa.

  • Falcon’s Flight is under construction at Saudi Arabia’s Six Flags in Qiddiya.
  • The ride will be the tallest and the fastest rollercoaster in the world.
  • It will be the world’s only exa coaster with a 600 ft+ drop.
  • Falcon’s Flight is scheduled to open in 2024.

11. Top Thrill 2

Top Thrill 2
  • Location: Cedar Point
  • Date Opened: 2024 (planned)
  • Height: 420 ft
  • Length: 3,422 ft
  • Seating Capacity: 20 people per train
  • Drop: 400 ft
  • Top Speed: 120 mph

Top Thrill 2 (previously, Top Thrill Dragster) is an exciting rollercoaster with overpowered specs. But it ranks lower on this list because it is currently not open to the public. The ride was closed for maintenance and upkeep and is set to reopen to the public in 2024.

It is a launched coaster with a 400-foot drop. That alone would set it above many rides mentioned above, but only after (and if) it opens.

Before Top Thrill Dragster was closed, its top speed was 120 mph. Top Thrill 2 will most likely have the same speed. The launched rollercoaster will cover 3,422 feet of track. Previously, Top Thrill had a 2,800-foot track, which is now being expanded.

The ride duration, as well as other specifics, will be clearer once the rollercoaster opens to the public. Until then, it will remain on the best rollercoasters list but under the currently operational Giga coasters.

  • Top Thrill 2 is set to open in 2024.
  • The ride will have a 400-foot drop and a top speed of 120 miles per hour.
  • Its maximum vertical angle will be 90 degrees.
  • The ride was previously operating as Top Thrill Dragster with the same height, drop, and speed specs.
  • After reopening as Top Thrill 2, the ride will have an expanded track.

12. Fury 325

Fury 325
  • Location: Carowinds
  • Date Opened: March 28, 2015
  • Height: 325 ft
  • Length: 6,602 ft
  • Seating Capacity: 32 riders per train
  • Drop: 320 ft
  • Top Speed: 95 mph
  • Ride duration: 3:00

Fury 325 is a 6,602-foot-long rollercoaster with a 320-foot drop. With a top speed of 95 miles per hour, it is one of the tallest and fastest rollercoasters in the US. Despite its speed, this ride has a 3-minute duration because of its track length.

If you have been disappointed by the short duration of the world’s fastest rollercoasters, then you will like the more balanced experience of Fury 325.

The ride doesn’t have the world’s tallest drop or the highest speed. But it is still among the best in the world in terms of speed, height, and track length. The only thing it leaves to be desired is an inversion. Like every other Giga coaster, Fury 325 has zero inversions.

  • Fury 325 is among the tallest seven rollercoasters in the world.
  • It has a 320-foot drop and a 95 mph speed.
  • The rollercoaster has a maximum vertical angle of 81 degrees.
  • Fury 325 is North America’s longest steel rollercoaster.

13. Hyperion

Hyperion
  • Date Opened: Energylandia Poland
  • Height: 253 ft
  • Length: 4,760 ft
  • Seating Capacity: 28 riders per train
  • Drop: 269 ft
  • Top Speed: 88 mph
  • Ride duration: 2:50

Hyperion is a high-speed rollercoaster located at Energylandia in Poland. It is Poland’s fastest rollercoaster ride, which might not sound like much until you see its specs. Hyperion has a drop height of 269 feet and a top speed of 88 miles per hour.

The rollercoaster doesn’t rely on speed alone, as it has one major inversion. In fact, Hyperion is the world’s tallest rollercoaster with an inversion.

Its steepest vertical angle is 85 degrees, which is pretty high for a chain lift hill rollercoaster. Aside from its large drop and solo inversion, Hyperion also has multiple airtime hills and even a water feature.

These aspects come together to create a unique and memorable experience. Whether it is memorable enough to warrant a trip to Poland is up to you to decide.

  • Hyperion is the world’s tallest rollercoaster with an inversion.
  • It has a top speed of 88 miles per hour.
  • The ride’s drop is 269 feet high.
  • The rollercoaster has a G-force of 4.8g

14. The Smiler

The Smiler
  • Location: Alton Towers
  • Date Opened: May 31, 2013
  • Height: 98 ft
  • Length: 3,838.6 ft
  • Seating Capacity: 16 riders per train
  • Drop: 98.4 ft
  • Top Speed: 52.8 mph
  • Ride duration: 2:45

Among rollercoaster enthusiasts, the fans of speed and airtime dominate the conversation. But for many coasterheads, speed is not what makes a rollercoaster great. That’s why they have no problem skipping the likes of Formula Rossa for more “holistic” experiences. They prioritize track maneuvers like banked turns, zero gravity rolls, and inversions.

The Smiler will put a smile on your face if you’re that kind of coasterhead. This rollercoaster has the most inversions in the world. Not 6, not 12, but 14 inversions are packed into its 3,838-foot track.

The entire ride lasts 2 minutes and 45 seconds, during which riders experience a g-force of 4.6g alongside two dive loops, two corkscrews, one double corkscrew, and a cobra roll. And that’s not an exhaustive list of its track maneuvers.

What The Smiler offers in track acrobatics, one might expect it to lack in speed. But this rollercoaster is pretty fast (52.8 mph) and has a decent 98.4-foot drop. That said, it is not for speed-chasers or drop-chasers.

  • The Smiler has two chain lift hills and 14 inversions.
  • This rollercoaster has the record for having the most inversions in the world.
  • It has a maximum speed of 52.8 miles per hour and a drop height of 98.4 feet.
  • The ride has a minimum height requirement of 4 feet and 7 inches.

15. Coaster Through the Clouds

Coaster Through the Clouds
  • Location: Nanchang Sunac Land
  • Date Opened: May 28, 2016
  • Height: 242
  • Length: 5,104 ft
  • Seating Capacity: 28 riders per train
  • Drop: 255 ft
  • Top Speed: 84 mph
  • Ride duration: 4:12

Coaster Through the Clouds is a rollercoaster in China. It is the country’s fastest and tallest rollercoaster. The ride has a top speed of 84 miles per hour and a drop height of roughly 256 feet. It lasts 4 minutes and 12 seconds, during which riders go over intense overbanks and multiple floater hills.

Traveling to China is not for everyone, and while this is one of the best rollercoasters in the world, it is not good enough to warrant international travel. But if you’re planning to visit China anyway – for business or as a tourist– then this ride is worth checking out.

  • Coaster Through The Clouds is located in China.
  • It is China’s fastest and tallest rollercoaster.
  • The ride lasts over 4 minutes and has a top speed of 84 mph.
  • It has a 256-foot drop and very intense turns.

16. Shambhala

Shambhala
  • Location: PortAventura Park
  • Date Opened: May 12, 2012
  • Height: 249 ft
  • Length: 5,131 ft
  • Seating Capacity: 32 riders per train
  • Drop: 256 ft
  • Top Speed: 83 mph
  • Ride duration: 3:00

Shambhala opened as the tallest and the fastest rollercoaster in Europe but was later beaten by Red Force, a newer rollercoaster at the same park, Spain’s PortAventura Park. It has a maximum speed of 83 miles per hour alongside a 256-foot drop. Shambhala has a duration of 3 minutes, during which riders zip across 5,131 feet of steel tracks.

The ride has a splashdown element alongside five camelback hills –the kinds of maneuvers missing in Red Force. Its experience is more holistic, though it could have been made better with at least one inversion. Even without an inversion, Shambhala is good enough to be among the top 20 rollercoasters in the world.

  • Shambhala is a rollercoaster located in Spain.
  • It has a top speed of 83 miles per hour.
  • The ride has a 256-foot drop and a 3-minute duration.
  • It is one of the fastest rollercoasters with a splashdown element.

17. Eejanaika

Eejanaika
  • Location: Fuji-Q Highland
  • Date Opened: July 19, 2006
  • Height: 249.33
  • Length: 3,782.83 ft
  • Seating Capacity: 20 riders per train
  • Drop: 210 ft
  • Top Speed: 78.3 mph
  • Ride duration: 2:10

If you like inversions more than speed, then Eejanaika might be the rollercoaster for you. This ride is located in Japan and features three track inversions. If you include seat inversions, the total number of Eejanaika’s inversions adds up to fourteen.

Seat inversions are maneuvers where the track remains straight, but the seat flips by a factor of 180 degrees (minimum). Only 4D rollercoasters can pull this off. Currently, there are 17 4D rollercoasters in the whole world, and Eejanaika is the tallest among them.

At 249 feet high, Eejanaika is the tallest rollercoaster to have that many inversions. These maneuvers are packed into a ride duration of 2 minutes and 10 seconds, thanks to Eejanaika’s 78.3 mph speed.

  • Eejanaika is located at Japan’s Fuji-Q Highland Park.
  • It is the world’s tallest 4D rollercoaster.
  • The ride features three track inversions and 11 seat inversions.
  • It has a maximum height of 249 feet and a maximum speed of 78.3 miles per hour.

18. Steel Vengeance

Steel Vengeance
  • Location: Cedar Point
  • Date Opened: May 5, 2018
  • Height: 205 ft
  • Length: 5,740 ft
  • Seating Capacity: 24 riders per train
  • Drop: 200 ft
  • Top Speed: 74 mph
  • Ride duration: 2:30

Steel Vengeance is a hybrid rollercoaster with head-spinning specs. It has a 200-foot drop and a 90-degree maximum vertical angle. The ride lasts 2 minutes and 30 seconds and covers 5,740 feet of hybrid tracks. The ride’s maximum speed is 74 miles per hour, which it achieves towards the end of its biggest drop.

While its speed and drop stats do not measure up against the speediest rollercoasters in the world, its track maneuvers make it better in other aspects. Steel Vengeance beats three of the fastest rollercoasters in the world in track length and inversion metrics. It is the longest hybrid rollercoaster in the world, and it features four inversions.

Steel Vengence also has historical significance. It broke 10 records when it opened, replacing its wooden predecessor, The Mean Streak. The ride’s previous records include the most inversions on a hybrid coaster, the steepest drop for a hybrid coaster, and the highest speed for a hybrid coaster.

Currently, Steel Vengeance holds the record for most airtime for any rollercoaster in the world (27.2 seconds) and the fastest airtime hill on a hybrid coaster (74 miles per hour).

  • Steel Vengeance is the world’s first hypercoaster with hybrid tracks.
  • It has the highest airtime for any type of rollercoaster in the world.
  • The ride has a 200-foot drop and a top speed of 74 miles per hour.
  • The rollercoaster has a steep 90-degree drop.

19. Do-Dodonpa

Do-Dodonpa
  • Location: Fuji-Q Highland
  • Date Opened: December 21, 2001
  • Height: 161 ft
  • Length: 4,081 ft
  • Seating Capacity: 8 riders per train
  • Drop: 160 ft
  • Top Speed: 110 mph
  • Ride duration: 00:55

Do-Dodonpa is a thrust air rollercoaster that holds multiple speed-related records. While its top speed of 112 miles per hour is not the greatest in the world, its acceleration definitely is. The ride goes from 0 to 112 mph in 1.56 seconds. Even the fastest rollercoasters in the world do not have that kind of acceleration.

Then there is Do-Dodonpa’s inversion, which was installed during a major upgrade and has made it one of the fastest rollercoasters in the world to feature a track inversion. Do-Dodonpa generates a G-force of 4.3g during its 55-second duration.

With Mount Fuji as its backdrop, this Japanese rollercoaster is a global tourist attraction and a major draw for coasterheads. It has a decent 160-foot drop, record-breaking acceleration, and one of the highest track inversions in the world.
